40-CFR-01 The purpose of Intragen is to segment white blood cell mutation and regenerate dying cells. Cytotoxicity and effect on lymphocytes is of utmost importance. I must find a way to balance the protein's effects. An overly aggressive immune system and cell overgrowth are my two biggest concerns. But it should strengthen the immune system's response to malignant foreign material. Malignant foreign material - any non-native substance - viruses, bacteria...malignant cells. In other words, the cure for cancer. Obviously this is no small task. But we have made great strides so far, and I believe we are on our way to a real cure. The protein should stimulate the production of white blood cells depleted by neutropenia. Neutropenia,is the loss of specific white blood cells that defend against infection. It is caused by, among others, exposure to radiation, certain medications...and cancer. If I can artifically promote the production of these lost cells…I may find the answer. If this proves successful, we can combat any other affliction: viral, bacterial, parasitic... In the past, researchers were lauded and honored for curing a single disease. But what if we could cure ALL disease? No more cancer, no more HIV virus, no more ebola... The suffering of millions could be lifted with a single injection. A working strain of Intragen would mean the end of all disease as we know it. Initial analysis of Intragen lagomorpha tissue shows resistance to cancerous cells. Griffin interrupted my experiment, again. The Board is getting impatient.
40-CFR-02 Experiment included taking a biopsy of living rabbit tissue and injecting it with malignant material. The tissue soon showed signs of deterioration, but almost immediately repelled the foreign cells. Promising. After extended observation, lagomorpha tissue now displays...unfavorable consequences. The Intragen ITC instigates hyper-aggressive immune system activity. Cell cannibalism is occurring. And in other tissue, resistance is simply insufficient. The cells are too aggressive. All my attempts to immunize cells against programmed cell-death meet with mixed results. The modified cells act as if they identify the threat, but attack indiscriminately. This would make a remarkable weapon.
Awaiting results from ITC spectrum analysis.
40-CFR-03 The results of latest tests are distrubing. Healthy cells are producing out of control and…rupturing. Cellular effects are total membrane breakdown and uncontrollable cell division...among others. I hoped it was a result of isolated biopsy tissue, so I injected into a living subject. The subject rabbit displayed positive signs at first, exhibiting no major physical disturbances. Thorne has been looking after Ivy. She has been adapting very well to the move, but I know she misses Ivanna. The subject displayed positive signs Until it ruptured inside the cage. Every test has lead to eventual host death. If I cannot get past this roadblock, I have no idea how long I'll have to repeat the same experiments. Last subject turned violent before expiring. Still, cancer cell destruction is only partial. .the cells still aren't resisting long enough for the immune system to do their job. I am still having difficulty adjusting to this new lab…However it is a significant improvement from my facilities in Obolensk. Griffin has built the largest facility I have ever seen. Ingen Bio's campus must be the largest in North America. SRCAM never had funding like this. Even Vector at Novosibirsk could not afford a proper integrated SEM. Urakov would be amazed. This site drawfs GosNIIPM. Griffin's support for the BII-ELAN Program could save Obolensk. But I have a bad feeling about his motives. USAMRIID officials from Fort Detrick were here for their American holiday. Evelyn loved the firework display. She is so innocent. She has so much life. She reminds me so much of Ivanna. Nevertheless, I must continue to document my progress over the coming weeks in hopes that it may guide further research. Ivy is still asleep. When she is sleeping, I can see what she will look like as an adult. IngenBio Security came to our campus apartment this morning. Sgt. Thorne said the Intragen server was compromised. Griffin is obviously concerned about security leaks. Nothing can compromise our development. The USAMRIID still has a file on me. They think I must have still ties with Alibek or Popov. Ha. Thorne informs me that 40-CFR-761 propogation is complete. Hopefully that will eliminate prying eyes. Thorne is a good man. Despite being Griffin's приверженец / henchman, I have seen how he cares for Evelyn. I trust him. Similar ITC results as before: 32.7075.117.1638>32.42.5>117, 9.8m>08.07.23>4039
40-CFR-04
Testing continues. The host immune system is finally supporting itself long enough to repel initial infection. Unusual traffic on the IngenBio server. I hope this has nothing to do with the server security integrity. I am exhausted from the long hours of my documentation. Injecting Marburg infected endothelial cells with Intragen ITC. All Filoviridae cell results are promising. First period of research has met with...acceptable success. Moving on to second period. My god. The Intragen protein spread to the surrounding cells. It is blocking the palladin upregulation and regenerating at an incredible rate. Second period consists of accelerated stimulation of the immune system. The cells are learning how to attack. This should promote increased T-cell response and cell-death of the invading material. It would be an impressive weapon. I must have nodded off for a moment…I have not slept much recently. I was dreaming of Ivanna again. When she forgot the soup and nearly burned the apartment down. Ivy was so frightened. Ivanna was everything to me. Ivy is all I have left of her. I can still see Ivanna in her eyes. The second period sat too long. The cells ruptured the SEM glass. The sample destroyed the foreign cells with incredible strength. There is scar tissue residue on the SEM, as if it attacked the microscope. Another night of so rest. I keep having dreams of Ivy becoming a... monster. Griffin has increased security throughout the facility. He suspects outside observers are monitoring the facility. Thorne brought Ivy to the child care facility this morning. He's been more of a babysitter than a security commander. 40-CFR-05_9 Testing resumes. Now that I have secured the cells defense mechanism, I must work on promoting decisive cellular regeneration. Initial cell resistance to Filoviridae cells is beyond expectations. Must observe for possible side effects. Affected cells became too aggressive to surrounding host tissue. Subject expired. Despite these small obstacles, I am considering Intragen test 40-CFR-05 a partial success. I will allow remaining control subject to absorb Intragen ITC adjuvant via IV for the next few hours... Control subject ruptured when Intragen protein attacked cytoskeletal neurofilaments. It appears the subject persisted in throwing itself at its glass cage. Appears to have expired due to self-inflicted wounds. I'm so close, I know it. Why must it be all-or-nothing with these damn cells? Either they stand dormant, or they attack whatever they can find! I will leave subject alone this afternoon. Subject maintains increased respiration and heart rate, but hopeful overall. After leaving injected Control subject in isolation, new observations show no major negative effects. Thorne woke me up this morning in my lab. I fell asleep at my desk again.
40-CFR-6 After modification to the IgG polypeptide chain, the new subject absorbed Intragen ITC adjuvant through direct injection via thecal puncture. 40-CFR-6. The new subject has destroyed all hostile pathogens in its system. This is unbelievable. Control subject's heart rate has been more than 3X normal for the 3 hours. Subject should be dead by now, but isn't. Introduced a stronger strain of pathogen into subject. It was destroyed almost immediately. I also nearly lost my hand.
40-CFR-7_11 Subject has become hyper-aggressive and resistant to all sedatives. Had to move to reinforced fiberglass cage. Despite the negative effects on the subject's psyche, the physical response is incredible. I think this is it... I've induced every strain of virus and pathogen at the subject. It still lives. It survives. Ivanna...I've done it. Through a single ITC adjuvant, I can strengthen cellular resistance and induce an immediate immune system response. Observed issues with membrane over-stimulation, hyper-aggressive lymphocytes, and odd tagging of non-hostile tissue. Nevertheless, subject's cellular makeup holds strong. This is the first working strain of Intragen...this IS the cure! Once I present my findings to Griffin and the board, we can proceed to full-scale clinical testing! The subject is still alive. I've done it! Intragen is a true Panacea! I hope I will dream of Ivanna tonight.
40-CFR-12_15 Griffin…He tried to take it from me, that snake! I never should have trusted him. I showed him the ITC results. I've never seen him smile that way before. When I found him, he was already in a meeting with the board and those USAMRIID stooges. Who knows how long he's been planning this? I can see tell he's thinking. It should have been obvious from the beginning. Griffin plans to weaponize it, sell it off to the highest bidder. That's all he ever wanted from this. How could I have been so blind. Some part of me has always known - my relocation, the tours, the senator visits...blood money. But what else could I have done? I had the knowledge, but he had the money. We needed each other. I cannot allow them to have this technology. It is far to dangerous in the wrong hands. I created this to heal, not to destroy. I must destroy all of my work - the risk is too great. I know he will want to test it on humans.
40-CFR-20 It is with unimaginable regret that I must cease all research into the Intragen project. My reasearch is still incomplete. Multiple experiments with live subjects still display…lethal virility. Isolated cells show promise despite known issues, but when introduced into a living organism, the host attacks outside stimulus. Even if the tissue itself adapts to the drug, the creature's psyche certainly does not. Even in a simple rabbit, the effects are…disturbing. If Intragen was used as a weapon, it could spread to pandemic proportions. I will need months, perhaps years, to refine the drug. I fear I do not have that time. Griffin is getting closer. He wants to create monsters, and I cannot, I WILL not allow that. As such, all research into the Intragen project is officially terminated. Ivy has been very sick recently. If she does not improve, I must take her to the clinic.
40-CFR-22 Evelyn has not improved. She has been growing worse over the past several weeks. I brought her to the clinic, but I have seen the look in her eyes before. I pray it is not as I fear. Not again. Griffin grows impatient with me. I cannot hide the fact I have abandoned my research much longer. Hazelton keeps making visits to my lab. He is as much a vulture as the rest of the Board. When he looks at me, it is as if he knows something about me. That stare chills my soul.
40-CFR-23 God has a jackal's sense of humor. When I lost Ivanna to the sickness, all I had left was Ivy…but now... It is hard to imagine that a loving god could carry such a vendetta, but I can imagine no other answer. To watch my wife die of cancer was a tragedy. But to discover my daughter also has the sickness? My beautiful Ivy has been diagnosed with Acute lymphatic leukemia. If I do nothing, she will die in 6 months. Her symptoms are so severe, it is as if it was introduced into her system from exposure to a chemical agent. Traditional chemo will have no effect. Ironic how this would happen just as I prepare to destroy my cure. So what will I do? Turn her into a guinea pig? Or let her follow her mother into an early grave? Griffin will see me dead before long, this I accept. But must I watch my only joy expire before I do? How can I use this weapon on my most precious gift? What if I cannot refine the drug in time? A life of abnormality is no life. Perhaps I will bring her in and just run a few tests…no harm in that. I can avoid Griffin for a while longer, if I am careful. If I am very careful.
40-CFR-26
Another bad dream. Evelyn was ripping people apart with her bare hands, while Ivanna stared into me with the blackest of eyes. I still remember the night I met Ivanna. She was wearing a long red dress that shifted on her shoulders as she danced. I was an intern working for the government, and I had been invited to an official event in Moscow. I was so nervous. When she spoke to me, and it took me nearly thirty seconds to form my first sentence. Ivanna didn't want me to take the job at Koltsovo. Especially after what happened at Sverdlovsk. We both knew what I was creating - death in a bottle. But she was pregnant with Ivy, and we needed the money. And to be honest, I craved the challenge. Despite what we were developing, I saw my task was much more noble - to also find cures to what I created. When I saw what the Americans had done with their SCV Program, using our initial Polio strains…I knew we had created a monster. As my career grew, they transferred me to Obolensk. No increase in pay, but better conditions and less…volatile. The facility was cutting-edge, unlike anything I'd ever seen before. I was in heaven. I lost myself in my work. When Ivanna contracted cancer, morphine and condolences were all my government could offer. After the incident at Building 15, everyone was suspect. I was taken in for questioning. Ivanna died while I was in custody. When I was released, I was forced to defect to America with Ivy. I couldn't even give her a proper burial. I fled with Ivy to the USA while she lay rotting on a dirty mattress. At first, I thought I could save the world from itself. Now I see that I cannot even protect those that I love. I've done all that I can with cloned cells and sterile rabbits. I've brought Ivy to my new lab. I have moved my work offsite. Too many watchful eyes there…Griffin does not suspect what I have done. He has no interest in civilian use. Warfare and blood money is all he can think about. I have resumed by reasearch, and begun Intrathecal chemotherapy on Evelyn. I am going to save my daughter. Intragen is still too dangerous to use. I fear how my clinical results would manifest in a human. I am sorry, Ivy. You are all that I have left of her. I know this may hurt you, and I understand if you come to hate me for it. But I will not allow fate to interfere with me yet again. Griffin is getting closer, but I don't care. My daughter will not suffer the same fate as her mother.
40-CFR-28
Thorne tried to warn me. He came to my office last night. He said Griffin knows of the offsite lab. It does not matter anymore. I will do whatever I can for her in the time I have remaining. I know Thorne will be the one to come for me when the time comes. But I am not afraid. Rather him, than that vulture Hazelton...or Doyle. I have seen death in his eyes. Griffin needs me alive, but I have a feeling he will be disappointed. Thorne is a good man…but eventually he will have no choice. Until then, I must make every moment count. It is no longer a question of curing her. I must mitigate the horrendous effects of the serum. Watching these rabbits rip themselves apart in their cages…I cannot imagine that of my Ivy… Every variant has met with unacceptable results. I have created the worst weapon imaginable. Griffin must never find this. If this technology was weaponized, I cannot conceive of the destruction it could produce. A pandemic unlike any other. I am desperate for more time. I would beg, if I thought it would be of any use. But who would I beg? God? Hah! He has shown me his idea of mercy. I will go on until my body or spirit abandons me.
40-CFR-31 I have not seen Griffin in many days. He is closing in. I do not have much time. I will conceal my technology within Ivy. If all goes well, I can save her without anyone knowing what was done. Then I can destroy all of my work and Griffin will have nothing! Even if she Ivy is discovered, there is no way to extract the specific protein markers from her body. I have had positive results with Ivy's tissue, though the mutation of her white blood cells is still dangerous. The aberrations could manifest themselves when she is older, but that is a risk I must take. Hopefully her body will have matured enough so that the effects will not be too extreme. She should be able to control it. By then, I believe she will find ways to suppress the symptoms, if she knows what to look for. I must leave her something...something to help guide her through this. Perhaps a message for her to find later. A somewhat normal life may still be in her future. The mere thought of it comforts me. I wish I could be there for her, but the world will be a more dangerous place with me alive... I may even sleep tonight, for the first time in...too long.

Warehouse Explosion Kills Cancer Scientist April 16, 1995 - 10:13 a.m. ET Salt Lake City Fire Department rescuers are still searching a destroyed warehouse for victims after a fire and apparent explosion killed at least five people and injured more than 2 others authorities said. The cause is being investigated, but early reports suggest a possible chemical or oxygen detonation. Reports of gunfire were reported to local authorities at approximately 8:22am, just moments before the explosion. Among the victims was former Soviet research scientist Dr. Leonard Kendall, 58 years old, of Ingen Bio Corporation. Fire officials said no measurable amounts of harmful chemicals or radioactivity were released in the explosion, however they believe the warehouse was being used by Dr. Kendall for conducting offsite experiments for medical research. Edward Hazelton, spokesperson for Ingen Bio said today that the surviving officer, Garret Thorne, told investigators an oxygen pressure-release valve was not functioning properly on a containment dome being used in an experiment and that the explosion occurred when Dr. Kendall tried to release the pressure manually. There was not explanation as to why the Ingen Bio officer was at the offsite location when the incident occurred. In a statement from Ingen Bio CEO/President, Dr. Harlan Griffin told reporters “We are deeply saddened at the loss of Dr. Leonard Kendall. This was a tragedy for our company, and his memory lives on in the research we continue everyday.” Ingen Bio has promised full cooperation with the local investigation. City authorities said the company's onsite safety procedures were regularly reviewed and passed inspection every time, however they are unclear why the scientist was working offsite. As of yet there is no explanation for what caused the explosions and as to why in excess of 100 tons of high explosive oxygen and combustible chemicals were stored in a residential area.
